Upscaling private Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) investments
The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety supports selected Latin American countries with achieving their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the UNFCCC Paris Agreement. Forest landscape restoration (FLR) plays a key role in achieving Paraguay’s NDCs. For the successful implementation of FLR measures, significant private sector investments are needed.
Between 2021 and 2023 Unique has provided technical assistance to increase the impact of forest businesses on FLR, such as supporting the testing of commercial silviculture on native species, and developing a Competence Center to increase local stakeholders capacity for FLR. Through alliances with the Volendam Cooperative, the University of Asunción, and experts in the sector; Unique has developed and implemented more than 10 training modules reaching over 300 practitioners in the forest sector.
Restoration program for biological corridors and protection forests in the Caazapá Department
On behalf of the Paraguayan Ministry of Public Works and Communication, Unique worked with 118 smallholders in the Department of Caazapá to conduct reforestation and protect watercourses along the banks of the Yacui and Tayay streams. Between 2021 and 2023, the project assisted smallholders in implementing agroforestry by providing technical assistance and over 40,000 native timber and yerba mate seedlings.
Development of financial products and incentives for the Paraguayan forest sector
Within the framework of the Poverty, Reforestation, Energy and Climate Change (PROEZA) project financed by FAO, Unique has supported financial institutions to integrate forest production parameters into their financial analyses. The goal was to strengthen the PROFORESTAL credit instrument, designed to support and grant access to credits for forestry production for small, medium and large producers. Unique has trained loan officers from 11 national financial institutions, members of the Sustainable Finance Roundtable, between 2021 and 2023.
